Why preflop matters so much
Preflop determines stack-to-pot ratio, initiative, positional structure, range composition, and how often you arrive on later streets with clear strategic advantage. Loose or random preflop decisions create expensive downstream problems.
Opening ranges should respect position
Early position requires tighter ranges because more players remain behind you. Late position allows you to open wider because fewer players remain and you are more likely to act in position postflop.
3-betting is not just about strong hands
3-bets can be used for value, pressure, isolation, and denial of equity. But careless 3-betting creates bloated pots without enough strategic clarity. Good 3-bets are chosen intentionally, not emotionally.
Blind defense requires discipline
The blinds are structurally difficult positions. Many players lose heavily by over-defending weak hands and then navigating poorly postflop out of position. Defending should be thoughtful, not automatic.
Good preflop questions
- How strong is my hand relative to my position?
- How likely am I to have position after the flop?
- Am I opening, calling, or 3-betting for a clear reason?
- How will this hand behave across common flops?
- Is the table soft enough to justify looser opens?
